The Insider (Michael Mann – 1999) A

I am not sure how much of the details in this ‘based on true events’ movie are accurate, but I suspect the broadstrokes are certainly true. Big tobacco lied, BIG TIME and a whistle-blower was the main reason that caused them to settle for large sums of money. That and a lot more is told in this intense brilliantly acted movie. What I found most fascinating is that it does not only focus on the Russell Crowe character, the aforementioned whistle-blower, but also on the 60 minutes producer (Al Pacino) who convinced him to talk. You learn a lot about him as well as the slew of supporting characters, most notably Mike Wallace played by Christopher Plummer.
