Winter Light (Ingmar Bergman – 1962) A

Dark and gloomy, set in the cold snowy winter of a Swedish small town it covers a few hours in which we are introduced to the priest, his mistress, his 5 or 6 parishioners and the poor soul who comes to him for guidance. The priest fails miserably in helping the fellow. All he wanted was a reason to believe that the world is not going to end any time soon. The priest does not have an answer for him and seems more preoccupied with the cold he is nursing. It all seems like a simple story and it is. It is very subtle but masterfully gives us a window into these people’s lives.
