The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (Seth Gordon – 2007) A

SOME SPOILERS follow:

Billy Mitchell held the highest score in the old classic Donkey Kong arcade game since the early eightes. Now, Steve, a guy from Washington state who recently got laid off thinks he can beat that score. He actually studies the game. He practices in his garage and he kicks Billy’s ass. That sounds like a bore of a documentary, but that’s when it really takes off and we get a portrait of each of these guys’ personalities and learn more than we proabably ever wanted to know about competitive arcade gaming. See, Billy is a successful restaurant owner now and is so desperate to hold on to his title that he actually manages to get Steve’s first record-breaking score to be discounted. Gaming “officials” actually go into Steve’s garage to “investigate” his Donkey Kong machine! He then manages to evade Steve’s various attempts to settle the score in public. Billy comes off as a scared little man while Steve, undettered, keeps at it. It’s fascinating to see those people Billy surrounds himself with. He is their idol and their hero. They talk to him with near reverence. It’s so fascinating honestly. These include his longtime business partner (Sanders), the Twin Galaxies people and some guy at the arcade (Kuh, who will proabbaly do murder if Billy asks him to).

  1. I saw this some time ago and LOVED it. Definitely one of the better movies I saw in 2010 (and there were a lot) and a trip down memory lane of my early gaming experiences.
